Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a term applicable to a great variety of clinical conditions, from asymptomatic bacteriuria to severe infections as sepsis. UTI is a medical problem that is quite frequent in any part of the world. People live with UTI without proper treatment especially treatment with antibiotics. Clinicians needs more precise diagnostic tools to diagnose UTI. Antibiotics is overused when diagnosis is not accurate. In diagnosis, rapid tests are used for initial treatment.

Urinalysis is one of the most important tests used in clinical laboratories in the diagnosis and follow-up of UTI. Microscopic-urine-sediment analysis has been the methodology most used for examining urine cells, particles and microorganisms. However, it is labor-intensive and time consuming; there is also considerable inter lab technician variability. Urine chemistry with dipstick has been widely used as complement to urinalysis examinations. Automated urine sediment analyzer, which performs automated microscopic urinalysis, facilitates this type of analysis.

Urinalysis automation improves both the accuracy and the productivity of urine-sediment analysis for urine sediment evaluation, especially to predict the growth of microorganisms in culture. In these cases, visualization of pathologic cells, white blood cells and erythrocyte dysmorphism is essential for diagnosis.
